The Shadow Lines is one of Amitabh Ghosh's most notable
novels and can be considered a masterpiece in the field of Indo-Anglican
fiction. The novel focuses on the meaning of political freedom and the power of
nationalism as well as the personal experiences of the narrator in the novel.
Tridiv is the narrator's uncle. He was in his early twenties
and a very skilled storyteller. He often tells narrators stories about his
years living in London with Price. Tridiv's sense of place in his story is so
specific that the narrator can find his way around London years later as an
adult based on what Tridiv says. Tridive has an atlas that he uses to show the
narrator that he speaks in the stories of the world.
The relationship between the narrator and Tridiv is very
good, like good friends, although Tridiv is the narrator's uncle, Tridiv is the
narrator's guide, the narrator gains influence, the narrator gets an idea of
Tridiv.
Tridiv taught him at an early age to see things clearly
without shadows or illusions in the room. The two have a strange relationship.
The young narrator considers it "the only chance to understand the
trinity". Tridiv is also a storyteller in this sense. He tells the story
of his journey "in batches" to the narrator.
The narrator appears not only as a mirror of the triad, but
also as a mirror of time, space and people. What Tridiv wants is finally
realized by her mirror image fifteen years after Tridiv's death when she meets
May Price and discovers that she too is trapped in the past.
“We learn about Tridiva's personality from the narrator. The
narrator, who plays an important role in the novel, remains "neutral,
tasteless" throughout his adult years as he tells a complex story on many
levels.
Finally, I can say that the relationship between Tridiv and
the storyteller is good.
